Charles Talbot, the 15th Earl of Shrewsbury,
died in 1827, never completing his ideas for the house and
gardens. His successor, John Talbot, was his nephew, and continued
the 15th Earls work.
He paid tribute to his uncle by erecting a
monument to him, based on the monument to Lysicrates in Athens,
built in 344 BC.
This version, was named the Choragic Monument,
and bears the inscription 'He made the desert smile'. The
bust of Charles Talbot was sculpted by Peter Hollins, from
cast iron.
