Rita : Construction Site : Construction Site March 2005

2nd March 2005
The "Bouncing Bugs" (formerly Ug Bugs in Ug Land) in their new location, as the operator cabin for the ride is constructed.
2nd March 2005
These pieces of steelwork were used for the transportation of Rita's trains from Germany to the UK.
2nd March 2005
The trains were secured onto these pieces of faux track, inside the containers.
2nd March 2005
The steel used in the trains' transportation may be retained for future train maintenance purposes.
2nd March 2005
Another look at the discarded steelwork. It is being stored behind Toyland Tours, along with the Lava Lump that is due to be relocated to the Forbidden Valley for 2005.

4th March 2005
The area underneath the crossover, where the queue lines are still being constructed.
4th March 2005
A nice shot demonstrating how tightly packed Corkscrew, Rita and the Sky Ride are.

4th March 2005
From Corkscrew's station platform, we look towards the ride's exit path that wraps itself around the queue line for both roller coasters.

4th March 2005
This is the area's central plaza, with the Corkscrew dinosaur skull now reinstalled in Ug Land.

4th March 2005
The path you will take once you've exited Corkscrew, and walk past the ride's photo booth.
4th March 2005
Rita's Priority Pass and Single Rider queue line entrances, with the ride restrictions board now up between them.

4th March 2005
A closer look at the Corkscrew dinosaur skull, which was placed in storage during the bulk of the Ug Land overhaul.

4th March 2005
Rita's queue line entrance sign now seems to be complete, unless the word "Rita" is due to appear on top of the curvy pole above it.

4th March 2005
These cylinders are possibly nitrogen to cool the hydraulics... answers on a postcard!
4th March 2005
The hydraulics shed for Rita, now completely themed.

4th March 2005
Here is a sneak peak at the view you'll get from Corkscrew's queue line.

4th March 2005
Corkscrew's queue line entrance, complete with "Do Not Feed The Animal" bones nearby.

4th March 2005
Another look at Rita's hydraulics shed, which will soon be tested to its limits as Rita's first run is due to happen next week.

4th March 2005
Alton Towers would like to remind you that despite appearances, you are actually still in a prehistoric land...

4th March 2005
The area next to Rita's hydraulics shed, where Ug Swinger will be placed. This is where the queue line will be built.

4th March 2005
Ug Swinger is being reinstalled in Ug Land after being temporarily moved off-site for the last few months.

4th March 2005
Ug Swinger's base being reconstructed. The ride is positioned slightly away from where it had previously been situated during the last few seasons.

4th March 2005
The area behind the hydraulics shed, which will be an access point for guests to get to Ug Swinger.

4th March 2005
The area in front of the hydraulics shed. Note the red-and-white barrels, which probably form part of the theming.

4th March 2005
Rita's alternative queue entrances, with the ride looming above.

4th March 2005
Here's a look at the station platform, as seen from the "control tower".

4th March 2005
Either 1 or 2 high powered smoke machines are to be fitted to the rear of the launch zone, and will fire a fraction of a second before launch, to give the effect of burning rubber and exhaust smoke.

4th March 2005
The side of the control tower now has this cool motif on it.

4th March 2005
On the platform, we take a look at the two Intamin Rocket trains. Note the Sky Ride station in the background.

4th March 2005
This is train number 1, aka the purple coloured train. The restraints seem less constricting than was originally feared.

4th March 2005
These seats will have to be comfortable, as the train is powered to 100km/h in less than 2.5 seconds...

4th March 2005
The back of the train has a very "Cadillac" feel to it, continuing the racing theme.

4th March 2005
The brake run, with train 2 (the blue coloured train) sat stationary in it.

4th March 2005
On closer inspection, we can see that this car has the "test dummies" in it in preparation for next week's test.

4th March 2005
These bottles are filled with anti-freeze. They are more detailed in terms of shape than the usual dummies used by Alton Towers for testing.

4th March 2005
Back on the station platform, looking towards the nearly complete Control Tower.

4th March 2005
Rita's on-ride photo shop, which you will see opposite you as you exit the ride.

4th March 2005
Work continues on the area to get it ready for the March 25th hotel guest rides...

4th March 2005
Bouncing Bugs, formerly Ug Bugs, in its new Cred Street home. The ride control booth has now been painted to fit in with the area's theme.

4th March 2005
Cred Street, which is the next part of Alton Towers to be redeveloped... watch this space!

5th March 2005
Part of the track has already been repainted before the ride is even opened! Due to complaints by locals about the track being visible from a distance, the highest points of Rita have been repainted green.

5th March 2005
This mimicks Corkscrew's lift hill which is also green. The idea behind it is that a green track will blend into the tree line better than a bright red or yellow one will.

5th March 2005
A temporary sign next to the Ug Land entrance, warning guests visiting between March 12th and March 31st that Ug Land is closed.

9th March 2005
Rita's maintenance shed is about half complete now, and it is bright red in colour (to match the control tower).
9th March 2005
From the Corkscrew lift hill we take a look towards the train in the offload part of the station.

9th March 2005
In this nice shot, you can see that most of the paving in Ug Land has been put back.

9th March 2005
Corkscrew is still without its canopy, but it will be in place by the time Ug Land opens to the public.

9th March 2005
In this photo you can clearly see where the track "jumps" from a bright red colour to a pale green, after complaints about the ride being visible from a nearby village.
9th March 2005
Rita's queue lines, which go under the launch section of track as you can see here.

9th March 2005
One of the speakers - Bose, naturally - for the ride music, which (like Spinball Whizzer) will be a playlist of hundreds of songs.

9th March 2005
Workers are still finishing the queue lines for Rita and Corkscrew.

9th March 2005
This is the "cattle pen" section of Rita's queue line.
9th March 2005
From here you can see Corkscrew's entrance and exit paths, which pass the Corkscrew on-ride photo booth.

9th March 2005
Another look at Rita's queue line, weaving around the ride's huge supports.

9th March 2005
Corkscrew's queue line entrance, with Rita looming above.

9th March 2005
Two of Corkscrew's music speakers. It remains to be seen if the "Ug Land" soundtrack will be kept.

9th March 2005
Another music speaker "planted" in the ground.

9th March 2005
Work on constructing the platform for Ug Swinger is continuing.

9th March 2005
At the bottom of the hydraulics shed, we can see the drum inside.

9th March 2005
And here's the top of the shed, complete with chequered patterns around the hole cut for the cables.

9th March 2005
The end of the launch section of track.

9th March 2005
This is the cooling system for the hydraulics, placed next to the shed.

9th March 2005
Next to the cooling system, the new Cave Games building is being constructed.

9th March 2005
Rita's entrance tyre.

9th March 2005
The restrictions sign for Rita. Remember to grip those restraints...

9th March 2005
At the top of the restrictions sign are the opening & closing times for the day.

9th March 2005
In the Rita single rider queue line, near to the station. The queue on the right is the "normal" queue.

9th March 2005
Rita easily dominates the Ug Land skyline.

9th March 2005
Train 2 sat in the maintenance shed, still with test dummies in. The first ever test run is not far away...

9th March 2005
This worker, who obviously doesn't fear heights, is hacking off branches of this tree with a chainsaw. The work is being carried out so that the Sky Ride does not collide with any branches.

9th March 2005
Rita's maintenance shed, which is still under construction.

9th March 2005
Train 1, which is sat in the offload section in this photo. Workers were transferring it back and forth from offload to onload today, gearing up for the first test run.

9th March 2005
The back of train 1.

9th March 2005
A nice front-on shot of the second train, in the maintenance garage.

9th March 2005
Of all the roller coasters at Alton Towers, Rita must have the most decorative trains!

9th March 2005
Underneath the station, where several large speakers have been installed. These are to make the "screeching tyre" sound effects that will accompany the launch of the train and the smoke effect.

9th March 2005
Still under the station, looking up at train 1.

9th March 2005
Looking down Rita's brake run towards the station. Notice that the "starting lights" have not yet been installed.

9th March 2005
Underneath the brake run, you can see that there are similar components to those seen underneath the launch, as well as the "fins" above the track.

9th March 2005
A close up of a wheel assembly on train 2.

9th March 2005
Inside the maintenance shed, looking towards the station.

9th March 2005
Looking towards where the track continues out the back of the maintenance shed, underneath the final turn.

9th March 2005
The side of the maintenance shed nearest to Corkscrew.

9th March 2005
Corkscrew's first drop, which should provide an excellent view of Rita.

9th March 2005
Ug Swinger is still being reconstructed next to Rita's first turn.

9th March 2005
The Sky Ride station in Ug Land. The ride will be open from the start of the season, so guests will have a nice view of the ride being tested.

9th March 2005
An arty shot of the two Rita trains.

9th March 2005
Looking at the front of the Rita maintenance garage from next to the station.

9th March 2005
Just over two weeks remain before Rita is due to open for Hotel guests only on March 25th.

10th March 2005
The view of the Ug Land entrance, now with a new sign.
10th March 2005
Surprisingly, instead of the old Ug Land rock sign going back in place, there's a new banner instead, welcoming guests to "Ug Land and The Thunder Rock Rally, featuring Rita".

10th March 2005
And on the other side of the banner, is a message inviting guests to "come again soon".

10th March 2005
To the side of the skull, there is an access path to a square bit of concrete. We think this may be for a food shop of some type for the Rita queue line.

10th March 2005
The dinosaur skull, which makes a nice set piece for the area.
10th March 2005
From the Rita main queue line, looking back towards the entrance.

10th March 2005
This photo seems to suggest that there will indeed be a food shop by the Rita queue line.

10th March 2005
Another look at the path leading towards the concrete floor.

10th March 2005
Work continues on both rides' queue lines, which should at least have entertainment in the form of Rita speeding along the track above.
10th March 2005
The dinosaur skull in its new home.

10th March 2005
The far end of Ug Land, which used to be the location of Ug Swinger, is now a viewing plaza for Rita and the entrance to Corkscrew's queue.

10th March 2005
Ug Swinger's construction is progressing quickly, if you look at yesterday's photos.

10th March 2005
A perfectly innocent photo of Ug Swinger. Really.

10th March 2005
The inside of Rita's hydraulics shed. You can see the massive pipes which feed into the hydraulic drum.

11th March 2005
The queue lines are still being worked on.
11th March 2005
Corkscrew, Rita, and Rita's maintenance shed, all tightly packed together.

11th March 2005
In the distance you can see the new Ug Land entrance sign, as well as site equipment. With the park opening tomorrow, we hope they're not still there by then!

11th March 2005
A nice shot of Corkscrew and Rita with the Ug Land shops in the background.

11th March 2005
From the top of Corkscrew's lift hill, you can clearly see where Rita has been repainted to blend into the treeline.
11th March 2005
Corkscrew's station roof is still uncovered.

11th March 2005
This shot shows the sharp change of direction at the top of Rita's first airtime hill.

11th March 2005
The enormous supports that the queue line weaves around.

11th March 2005
Here you can see where a corner of Corkscrew's platform has been cut out to make way for one of Rita's supports.
11th March 2005
And at the front of Corkscrew's queue line, you can see another of Rita's supports coming as close as possible.

11th March 2005
One of the trains on track during testing. The first test run happened yesterday at 6.30pm.

12th March 2005
The whole area is now looking a lot more complete, although there's still plenty to do...
12th March 2005
One of the trains testing, seen here during the launch.

12th March 2005
The train as it flies over the first air time hill.

12th March 2005
This train is the one being used for the test as it has the "dummies" in to simulate how the ride would perform with guests on board.

12th March 2005
The top of Ug Swinger is now back on the ride. It will not take much longer to construct the entire ride.
12th March 2005
The sign greeting guests to Ug Land.

12th March 2005
Ug Land's new entrance banner.

12th March 2005
The large fence in front of the station is to stop people jumping over into the single rider queue.

12th March 2005
A closer look at the launch section.
12th March 2005
If you look closely, you can see a worker on a "cherry picker", at the top of the first airtime hill.

12th March 2005
The final turn of the ride, which is taken at a higher speed than some people were expecting.

13th March 2005
These plants are going into areas around the queue lines.
13th March 2005
Tyres on the hydraulics shed roof, which you'll fly past at great speed.

13th March 2005
An access door into the hydraulics room. The idea of a viewing window for guests to look through, into the building, has been floated around.

13th March 2005
Rita screams around the first bend, as the ride is put through its paces.

13th March 2005
Ug Swinger's queue line is now being constructed.
13th March 2005
There's a train somewhere in this photo, see if you can spot it...

13th March 2005
Ug Swinger's construction continues. Riders will have a fantastic view of Rita whooshing past them at the coaster's highest speed.

13th March 2005
A nice shot of Rita during testing. The car is on the lowest of the three "crossover" sections of track.

13th March 2005
Look how close the Sky Ride comes to Rita's control cabin!
13th March 2005
One of Corkscrew's trains sat in the station.

13th March 2005
All the restraints on both trains are due to have padding fitted on them. The parts have been ordered but at the moment, only one seat on one train has had the padding fitted.

13th March 2005
Corkscrew surely has a good few years left, with Rita so interweaved around the old roller coaster, and the ride having had a repaint and a new motor.

16th March 2005
The wall underneath the "Race Control" booth looks different now, as Tussaud's Studios are now beginning to install more theming.
16th March 2005
A nice photo of Rita and Corkscrew together.

16th March 2005
Ug Swinger now has the chains for the seats attached.

16th March 2005
Corkscrew is being tested using the same dummies that were used during Air's testing.

16th March 2005
One of the "testers" doesn't look too happy about riding Corkscrew in the rain...
16th March 2005
Corkscrew's on-ride photo booth, which has hardly changed since Ug Land closed, save for the backdrop.

16th March 2005
Still no canopy for Corkscrew. With Tussaud's Studios on site we assume it'll be in place soon.

16th March 2005
These food outlets provide shelter for the foghorns that have yet to be put in place.

16th March 2005
This is one view you won't be able to get once Ug Land reopens, as the canopy covering Corkscrew's station will obstruct the view.
16th March 2005
Queueing for Corkscrew will be more exciting this year, as Rita rushes past overhead.

16th March 2005
Another look at one of the Corkscrew test dummies.

16th March 2005
Work continues putting plants in the soil that surrounds some of Rita's supports.

16th March 2005
The first turn, above, and the third turn, below.

16th March 2005
Seats for Ug Swinger sit on the platform, waiting to be attached to the many chains.

16th March 2005
More fog horns, this time sat next to Rita's hydraulics building.

16th March 2005
Looking through the dinosaur skull, towards Corkscrew.

16th March 2005
Back Stage Technologies are on site, presumably to install the smoke effect that happens when a train launches.

17th March 2005
Testing continues, including failed launch simulations. Note that the "starting lights" have been installed.
17th March 2005
Most of the area is now ready for guests, as you can see from this photo.

17th March 2005
The square block of concrete that had appeared recently has now been built on. This building will be a food stall for guests in the Rita queue line.

17th March 2005
A large crane lifted the food stall into place. It was then used to put the canopy back on Corkscrew's station.

17th March 2005
The park is very quiet at the moment. It will get a lot busier once Rita opens to the public...
17th March 2005
From the area next to Rita's maintenance shed, we look across the Corkscrew area towards Rita.

17th March 2005
Corkscrew's brake run to the right, and Rita's trim brakes above.

17th March 2005
A nice shot of Rita's track dominating the skyline.

17th March 2005
Corkscrew's brake run. Spot the Ribena Berry Bish Bash balls...
17th March 2005
The RBBB balls were put into a Rita train, so that Health & Safety could check where any loose items that fall from the ride would land.

17th March 2005
Looking from where Corkscrew's queue line used to be, towards Rita's station platform.

17th March 2005
The Single Rider and Priority queue line entrances, seen from the main queue line.

17th March 2005
A closer look at those themed starting lights, which we assume were made by Tussaud's Studios.

17th March 2005
One of the trains, seen from below the station platform.

17th March 2005
Looking down Corkscrew's brake run. Riders will get fantastic views of Rita during the ride circuit.

17th March 2005
Corkscrew has now started its annual testing regime.

17th March 2005
Ug Swinger is now looking more complete, as progress continues on constructing the new queue line.

17th March 2005
These bones used to be opposite Corkscrew's ride entrance before construction in Ug Land began. Now they lie on soil near where Ug Swinger is situated.

17th March 2005
Corkscrew's ride restrictions signs are now installed next to the queue line entrance.

17th March 2005
A train going at 60mph, at the end of the launch section.

17th March 2005
From the same standpoint, we look at a train halfway around the ride circuit, as it follows the earlier turn.

17th March 2005
Yet more foghorns... these ones being installed on Rita's hydraulics shed.

17th March 2005
Corkscrew's new canopy is now in place. Maroon replaces the old pale green, and the station barriers are to be painted in the same shade of red as the ones on Rita's platform.

17th March 2005
Rita's on-ride photo shop. Underneath you can see foghorns that were removed from the station platform, when it was realised that there wasn't enough clearance between them and the Sky Ride overhead.

18th March 2005
One week until the ride is launched with Hotel guests on board, and the testing schedule is still very busy.

18th March 2005
A stunning photograph of Rita during testing, with one of Alton Towers' most famous icons, Corkscrew, in the foreground.

18th March 2005
Looking at the ride circuit from Corkscrew's station platform.
18th March 2005
Standing in Corkscrew's queue line. On the right is the ride's exit path, and over the fence to the left is Rita's queue line.

18th March 2005
The reason that there is a 7 foot fence on one side of Corkscrew's queue line, is to prevent queue jumpers from hopping over straight into Rita's queue line.

18th March 2005
This bunting has appeared today, inbetween the supports of Rita's first turn.

18th March 2005
Looking towards Ug Swinger from what will eventually be grass.
18th March 2005
Another shot showing the bunting that has been put in place. It has also been put on part of Corkscrew.

18th March 2005
Rita's three airtime hills, as seen from Corkscrew's queue line.

18th March 2005
Some of Corkscrew's theming, in contrast to the Rita hydraulics shed in the background.

18th March 2005
This shot, taken from Corkscrew's exit path, shows just how close Rita comes to Corkscrew's station roof.

18th March 2005
Looking towards Corkscrew, from the ride's exit path. Once again you will be able to walk under Rita as it flies past at high speed.

18th March 2005
From the same spot, we turn towards Rita's airtime hills.

18th March 2005
You can see from this shot that Corkscrew's station canopy is the same colour as Rita's track.

18th March 2005
We reckon Corkscrew's exit path could become very crowded in 2005, with guests stopping to buy on-ride photos and also staring at Rita overhead.

18th March 2005
The two roller coasters.

18th March 2005
One of the trains heading over the crest of the first airtime hill, during testing.

18th March 2005
A train heads towards the third airtime hill at great speed.

18th March 2005
Ug Swinger is now fully constructed, after just 2 weeks
.

18th March 2005
Unlike previous years, the ride's operator cabin will no longer be in a booth on the platform.
Now, a new cabin will be constructed to one side of the ride.

18th March 2005
The chairs
have all now been attatched to the chains.

18th March 2005
This
shot shows just how close Ug Swinger is to Rita's launch. And remember, those chairs swing outwards during operation...

18th March 2005
The restrictions sign next to the entrance of Rita's Single Rider Queue (SRQ)
.

18th March 2005
A No
Entry sign for a staff-only area.

18th March 2005
Rita
in fading daylight. The clock to the ride's opening is ticking...

19th March 2005
A great photo showing old and new in Ug Land this year.

25th March 2005
The first day of Ug Land being open to the public, and guests are flocking to the area.
25th March 2005
Unfortunately, no Hotel guests or member of the public got a ride today, as there were technical problems in the morning.

25th March 2005
The inside of the now completed Rita on-ride photo shop. The camera for ride photos had not been fitted at this point.

25th March 2005
The test dummies have been removed from the trains and are now sat on the platform.

25th March 2005
Looking at the station platform from the exit.
25th March 2005
Two signs directing people in the queue line to the front row queue.

25th March 2005
The starting lights, which are now at the stage of being synchronised with the launch.

25th March 2005
The control booth, with what looks like emergency exit steps on the right.

25th March 2005
At Rita's queue line entrance. Note that a 3D sign of the ride's logo has been added to the top of the tyre theming.
25th March 2005
All these guests were hoping for a ride on Rita today - sadly it wasn't possible as the ride wasn't ready yet.

25th March 2005
The people in the foreground really put into perspective just how tall this roller coaster is.

25th March 2005
The fog horns on the station platform have now been reattached. The "TRRR" at the top stands for "Thunder Rock Rally Radio", which is the name given to the faux radio station being played around the area.

25th March 2005
The on-ride photo camera is being attached to a large pole, and then pivoted into place.

25th March 2005
Here you can see the on-ride photo camera in place, in front of the Sky Ride gondola.

25th March 2005
At the back of Ug Land, it is less busy than around Rita's entrance.

25th March 2005
The cattle pen queue line for Rita, as yet unused.

25th March 2005
Looking back towards the entrane of Corkscrew's queue line.

25th March 2005
Ug Swinger, which is not ready to be opened to the public yet.

25th March 2005
From Ug Swinger, looking back towards Corkscrew.

25th March 2005
Corkscrew's theming near to the queue line entrance.

25th March 2005
Ug Swinger's entrance sign, which has had a repaint.

25th March 2005
The end of Rita's launch. You can see the new Cave Games building still under construction, to the left of this photo.

25th March 2005
The entrance to Rita's queue line would stay closed all day.

25th March 2005
Fog horns on top of Rita's hydraulics building.

25th March 2005
Looking up at the track from the queue line entrance.

25th March 2005
Corkscrew's loading bays, which have been repainted to the same colour as Rita's track.

25th March 2005
Guests finally get to go on Corkscrew, after half a year of not being able to ride.

25th March 2005
Late on in the day, and the ride was being tested with two trains. This one (the purple one) however, did not have the front "car theming" of the train attached.

25th March 2005
Another look at the air time hills.

25th March 2005
